For the better part of two decades, going to class at UM-Dearborn has sometimes meant going for a drive. But after 22 years of classes split between the main campus and the Fairlane Center, UM-Dearborn is preparing to close the gap.

The College of Business plans to officially relocate in December 2027 to the Social Sciences Building , as described in a 2026 Facilities Operations report. While closing approximately a mile of space between the campuses, this construction will also make way for new developments in the space vacated by the COB.

For freshman students like Sebastian Dixon, a finance and accounting major, this change couldn’t happen at a more convenient time. “I want all my resources to be in one place and closer to campus,” he stated, saying, “It’s fantastic!” when asked how he felt about the University’s decision.

This change has the support of professors as well. Michael Iverson, a COB professor currently teaching in the Fairlane Center, said: “I think it’s going to be exciting just from how everything will be closer together. It will get students close to all the other buildings, and more importantly, all the other students, rather than being a standalone building and away from the campus vibes.”

Signs have been placed around the Fairlane Center detailing official plans and mockups for the new construction. One such sign at the building entrance reads: “The SSB on main campus will be reimagined for the future of business education. The space will foster innovation, collaboration, and real-world learning for the next generation of leaders.” Surrounding displays show 3D renderings for the new construction, promising an accessible and “seamless experience.”

As a freshman business student myself, it is exciting to be one of the first to experience a change that will shift how the COB functions for the foreseeable future. This also means that my class will be able to use first-hand experience to compare the old system to the new one, making this change even more meaningful.

By bringing students, professors, and resources closer to the main campus, UM-Dearborn hopes to create a more connected experience for everyone. After 22 years of classes spread between two locations, an end to the divide is in sight.
