The Detroit Pistons are in a promising position as they chase a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Despite some recent setbacks, their upcoming schedule could give them the boost needed to lock down home-court advantage. Here's a look at where things stand with 14 games remaining in the regular season.
Recent Challenges
The Pistons recently dropped two consecutive home games, even though the atmosphere at Little Caesars Arena was electric. Last Thursday, fans were buzzing after a big win over the Washington Wizards, but the Wizards bounced back with a narrow 129-125 win.
Saturday's matchup against the league-leading Oklahoma City Thunder didn't go as planned, either. A controversial ejection of Cade Cunningham hurt their chances in that game, although they managed to trim a 16-point lead down to just one in the final minutes. However, the Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ultimately sealed the game with an impressive performance. This two-game losing streak has put a dent in the Pistons' quest for the fourth seed.
Current Playoff Picture
With a record 37-31, the Pistons are surprisingly performing well and are tightly competing with the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers for the fourth seed. The Bucks, who are at 38-28, recently solidified their hold on the fourth spot by defeating the Pacers, making them two games ahead of Detroit. The Pacers, with a 37-29 record, narrowly lead the Pistons as they won their season series 3-1.
Key Upcoming Games
The Pistons’ final two games of the season are crucial, as they face the Bucks twice—first at home on April 11 and then in Milwaukee on April 13. These contests could potentially decide the Pistons' spot in the standings, giving them a chance to leapfrog the Bucks.
Favorable Schedule Ahead
Fortunately for the Pistons, their upcoming schedule includes some softer opponents, offering a great chance to improve their standing. They head out on a three-game road trip to play struggling teams like the New Orleans Pelicans, Miami Heat, and Dallas Mavericks. The Pelicans have a poor record at 18-50, the Heat have faltered since trading Jimmy Butler, and the Mavericks are dealing with issues following the Luka Doncic trade.
Interestingly, the Pistons have a solid road record of 19-15, making this an excellent opportunity to climb the standings. Upon returning home, they’ll face a weakened San Antonio Spurs and the Pelicans, followed by a matchup against the strong Cleveland Cavaliers. The schedule also includes road games against the Timberwolves, Thunder, and Raptors, plus home contests against playoff hopefuls like the Grizzlies, Knicks, and Kings—all critical for gaining momentum before their final games against the Bucks.
A Look Back: Pistons vs. Thunder
After a tough loss to the Wizards, the Pistons faced the formidable Thunder, hoping to bounce back. The Thunder recently secured a playoff spot with a win over the Boston Celtics and looked to be in good form. The Pistons aimed to take advantage of any potential complacency and attack with aggressiveness and intelligence.
The Pistons have a strong opportunity to secure a higher seed in the playoffs, thanks to a favorable upcoming schedule. If they can maintain focus and resilience, they'll be well-positioned for postseason success.
