The 2024 Emmys Awards were hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 15th. The Emmys are a series of annual awards recognizing excellent television performance.
TV series Hacks and Shōgun won best in television overall.
The father-son duo hosting the night is best known for their leading roles in Schitt’s Creek. The hosts lightheartedly presented the winners, while engaging in quick-witted banter and making jokes.
The writer of the HBO comedy-drama, Hacks also won an Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series award for the S3E9 episode, “Bulletproof”. The main character Jean Smart won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her entertaining performance.
Shōgun took home 18 Emmys throughout the show, also winning Best Drama, Best Actor and Actress, and Creative Arts awards, breaking the record for the most Emmy Awards won for a single season show. The show is a historical drama that is available to watch on Hulu.
Notably, leading role Anna Sawai became the first actress of Asian descent to win Outstanding Lead in a Drama for her performance as Mariko in Shōgun.
With 23 nominations, The Bear was expected to have great success at the Emmys this year, scoring third in the Outstanding Comedy Series section. Main characters Jeremy Allen White and Liza Colón-Zayas both won Outstanding Lead Actor/ Supporting Actress in a Comedy series.
Presenters of each category were grouped according to their most iconic TV role, cracking jokes with other TV parents, cops, and doctors. The actors shared funny stories about their backgrounds and inspirations for their roles, entertaining the audience between announcements.
Screenwriter of the drama series Slow Horses, Will Smith, commented, “Despite my name, I come in peace,” referencing the iconic 2022 incident where actor Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars. The jab was awarded with laughs from the audience as Smith accepted the award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
Due to the Hollywood writer strikes, the 2023 Emmy Awards were delayed until January of this year, this provides little time to get excited about the new awards, creating a ceremony that to some came off as lackluster and overdone.
Despite this, the ceremony was an overall success and greatly honored those awarded.
