Spanish Film (SPAN 451) is a upper level Spanish class, taught by Professor Jorge González del Pozo, where students perform historical and critical analyses of Spanish films created by major Spanish directors.
The class utilizes project-based learning and plenty of hands-on work to connect the historical, political, social and cultural content of the films to the traditions and problems that exist within Spanish culture. In its pilot semester in Fall 2023, students wrote press releases and reflections about their experiences in class. Here's what they had to say, in both their original Spanish submissions and English translations:

Mi experiencia con el proyecto de grupo de PBL fue muy provechosa. Yo soy parte del grupo B y nuestro tema central es el cine comercial en España. Elegimos hablar de su historia, sus características específicas, sus ejemplos principales y las diferencias de comercialización entre España y Estados Unidos.
Dividimos esos subtemas de manera muy simple, cada uno elegía lo que más le interesaba. Yo decidí hablar de las diferencias entre las industrias cinematográficas de esos dos países, pues me pareció muy interesante hacer ese análisis. Investigué bastante y descubrí que la diferencia principal es el presupuesto asignado a las películas. Fue muy significativo percibir que las consecuencias de esa discrepancia afectan no sólo a los resultados en la taquilla, sino también a las condiciones de producción, a la audiencia y al alcance internacional. Hay también otras diferencias como las franquicias - que son muy particulares del cine estadounidense - , además de las diferencias de estilo, temas y géneros. Me encantó pesquisar sobre ese tema.
Todos en mi grupo fueron muy dedicados, e intentamos ayudarnos en cada etapa del proyecto. Una cosa buena de tomar esa clase en línea fue poder hacer nuestras partes individuales separadamente según nos convenga y después juntarlas, revisarlas y contribuir entre sí.
La presentación fue la parte más difícil y, honestamente, si fuera por mí la grabaríamos mil veces, pero mi grupo intentó ser más directo y, aun con algunos pequeños errores, seguimos adelante. Todos contribuyeron y creo que hicimos un buen trabajo juntos.
My experience with the PBL group project was very rewarding. I am part of group B and our central topic is commercial cinema in Spain. We chose to talk about its history, its specific characteristics, its main examples and the marketing differences between Spain and the United States.
We divided those subtopics in a very simple way, each one chose what interested him/her the most. I decided to talk about the differences between the film industries of those two countries, because I found it very interesting to make that analysis. I did a lot of research and discovered that the main difference is the budget allocated to the films. It was very significant to perceive that the consequences of this discrepancy affect not only the results at the box office, but also the production conditions, the audience and the international reach. There are also other differences such as franchises - which are very particular to American cinema - as well as differences in style, themes and genres. I loved researching that topic.
Everyone in my group was very dedicated, and we tried to help each other at every stage of the project. One nice thing about taking that class online was being able to do our individual parts separately at our convenience and then put them together, revise them, and contribute to each other.
The presentation was the hardest part, and honestly, if it were up to me we would record it a thousand times, but my group tried to be more direct and, even with a few small mistakes, we still got it right. Everyone contributed and I think we did a good job together.

Este PBL fue una experiencia muy interesante. He realizado proyectos grupales antes pero disfruté esta colaboración. A mi grupo le fue muy bien. Uno de los miembros pidió aclaraciones sobre las instrucciones de la tarea. Luego utilizamos su sugerencia de diferentes categorías sobre películas comerciales. Tomé la categoría de Historia o contexto del cine comercial. Liam escribió sobre las principales características del cine comercial en España. Alex escribió sobre ejemplos famosos de películas comerciales. Manuela escribió sobre en qué se diferencia el cine español, y especialmente el cine comercial español, del cine estadounidense.
Al principio no estaba segura del tema porque solo habíamos visto algunas películas españolas y no había leído mucho más en el texto. Pude encontrar información de fuentes en línea que cité en nuestro artículo. Una vez que vi más películas entendí mejor la tarea. Fue entonces cuando conocí la influencia de Franco y especialmente de sus censores.
Como grupo, nos contactamos por Whatsapp y creamos documentos de Google. Fue fácil colaborar de esa manera en lugar de utilizar el correo electrónico. Disfruté mucho la presentación porque pude ver a mis compañeros. Recuerdo a Liam y Manuela de una clase anterior.
This PBL was a very interesting experience. I have done group projects before but I enjoyed this collaboration. My group did very well. One of the members asked for clarification on the task instructions. We then used his suggestion of different categories about commercial films. I took the category of History or context of commercial film. Liam wrote about the main characteristics of commercial cinema in Spain. Alex wrote about famous examples of commercial movies. Manuela wrote about how Spanish cinema, and especially Spanish commercial cinema, differs from American cinema.
At first I wasn't sure about the topic because we had only seen a few Spanish movies and I hadn't read much more in the text. I was able to find information from online sources that I cited in our article. Once I saw more films I understood the assignment better. It was then that I learned about the influence of Franco and especially his censors.
As a group, we contacted each other by Whatsapp and created Google docs. It was easy to collaborate that way instead of using email. I really enjoyed the presentation because I got to see my peers. I remember Liam and Manuela from a previous class.

El comienzo de este proyecto fue un poco difícil para mí porque estuve muy enferma
durante la primera semana del proyecto. En realidad no fue una gran parte de la decisión sobre el tema del proyecto, pero todavía era muy emocionante aprender más sobre las películas y nuestro tema de cuestionar el status quo.
Cuando empezamos a trabajar en el proyecto, decidimos que Marlien trabajaría en en el cine histórico y su importancia, Rayann trabajaría en un análisis de las películas y yo trabajaría en los eventos históricos que relacionan a las películas y nuestro tema.
Mientras no tuve un gran parte en la empieza, estaba muy contenta con el tema porque
unas de mis cosas favoritas de la clase fue la discusión alrededor de la película La voz dormida. La perspectiva femenina es algo que no es muy prevalente en las películas de la guerra, así que fue muy bueno que nuestras dos películas tenían esta perspectiva y que esta perspectiva fue relevante a nuestra tesis. Para mi investigación quería enfocar en cómo esta perspectiva femenina demostró más sobre los efectos de la era franquista. Estaba muy afortunada de buscar información sobre La ley de recuperación de la memoria histórica porque era muy interesante aprender sobre el cambio en España alrededor de la era franquista. También la relación con la voz dormida fue muy buena porque tiene relación con la clase y con nuestro tema.
Mi parte favorita del proyecto fue la presentación porque tuvimos la oportunidad de
presentar que aprendimos y mientras durante el proyecto la mayoría de nuestro trabajo fue separado, al fin toda de nuestra investigación tiene mucho sentido y la discusión al fin de la presentación demostró todo lo que aprendimos.
The beginning of this project was a bit difficult for me because I was very sick during the first week of the project. It wasn't really a big part of deciding on the subject matter of the project, but it was still very exciting to learn more about the films and our theme of questioning the status quo.
When we started working on the project, we decided that Marlien would work on the historical film and its importance, Rayann would work on an analysis of the films and I would work on the events of the films and I would work on the historical events that relate to the films and our theme.
While I didn't have a big part in getting it started, I was very happy with the subject matter because one of my favorite things about the class was the discussion around the film The Sleeping Voice. The female perspective is something that is not very prevalent in war films, so it was great that both of our films had this perspective and that this perspective was relevant to our thesis. For my research I wanted to focus on how this female perspective demonstrated more about the effects of the Franco era. I was very fortunate to seek information on La ley de recuperación de la memoria histórica because it was very interesting to learn about the change in Spain around the Franco era. Also the relationship with the sleeping voice was very good because it is related to the class and to our topic.
My favorite part of the project was the presentation because we had the opportunity to present what we learned. We had the opportunity to present what we learned and while during the project most of our work was separate, at the end all of our research made a lot of sense and the discussion at the end of the presentation demonstrated everything we learned.

Mi grupo y yo usamos mucho tiempo pensando sobre el tema para nuestros PBL proyecto, pero nosotros estábamos pensando demasiado. La respuesta fue muy fácil, porque una mejoría de las películas que vimos para clase estaban inspiradas o comentadas sobre la Guerra Civil Española.
Porqué cine es una forma de arte nació en el siglo XX y la Guerra Civil Española y sus consecuencias eran fuerzas que duraban durante una mejoría del siglo XX, es lógico que la guerra influyera en muchas películas de España. Por lo tanto, nuestro tema fue sobre cómo la guerra ha influenciado al cine Español, con una selección de películas como ejemplos.
Después del tema, la parte que llevó más tiempo fue poner toda nuestra investigación en una forma presentable. Nuestras investigaciones eran fáciles gracias a la biblioteca Mardigian. Pero, escribir lo que aprendemos era difícil para nuestros. Por otro lado, en mi grupo era muy fácil trabajar con. Todos los miembros trabajaban duro y nos ayudamos mutuamente.

My group and I spent a lot of time thinking about the topic for our PBL project, but we were thinking too much. The answer was very easy, because an improvement of the films we watched for class were inspired by or commented on the Spanish Civil War.
Because film is an art form born in the 20th century and the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath were forces that lasted for a better part of the 20th century, it stands to reason that the war influenced many films from Spain. Therefore, our theme was about how the war has influenced Spanish cinema, with a selection of films as examples.
After the topic, the most time-consuming part was to put all our research into a presentable form. Our research was easy thanks to the Mardigian Library. But, writing down what we learn was difficult for us. On the other hand, my group was very easy to work with. All members worked hard and we helped each other.
For me, the most difficult part was speaking in the presentation. In both English and Spanish, I am a person who needs time to communicate well. Writing or speaking with a script is perfect for me, but I think I was good enough on the project.

El cine comercial en España ha experimentado una gran evolución a lo largo de los años, y mi participación en un proyecto de trabajo en grupo me ha dado varias lecciones sobre este tema tan dinámico. A través de la colaboración y el intercambio de ideas, hemos explorado los elementos clave que definen el cine comercial en España y cómo estos afectan tanto a la industria como a la audiencia.
Nos enfrentamos a desafíos logísticos al intentar recopilar información sobre la industria cinematográfica en España. La falta de acceso a datos actualizados y la dispersión de la información complicaron la elaboración de una idea completa y precisa pero el desafío más grande que tuvimos fue el coordinarnos para hacer zoom meetings ya atendemos diferentes campus.
En conclusión, mi participación en un proyecto de trabajo en grupo sobre el cine comercial en España me dió una visión de esta industria en constante evolución. Aprendí que el cine no solo es una forma de entretenimiento, sino también una poderosa herramienta para explorar la identidad cultural, promover la diversidad y hablar acerca de los problemas de la sociedad.
Commercial cinema in Spain has undergone a great evolution over the years, and my participation in a group work project has given me several lessons on this dynamic topic. Through collaboration and the exchange of ideas, we explored the key elements that define commercial cinema in Spain and how these affect both the industry and the audience.
We faced logistical challenges in trying to gather information about the film industry in Spain. The lack of access to up-to-date data and the dispersion of information complicated the development of a complete and accurate picture but the biggest challenge we had was coordinating to zoom meetings and attending different campuses.
In conclusion, my participation in a group work project on commercial cinema in Spain gave me an insight into this constantly evolving industry. I learned that film is not only a form of entertainment, but also a powerful tool to explore cultural identity, promote diversity and talk about societal issues.

Al comenzar este proyecto grupo, no estaba seguro de qué esperar. Terminé disfrutando mucho el tema que obtuvimos, "cine comercial". Creo que esto es porque vivimos en los Estados Unidos y la mayoría de las películas aquí son de este tipo. Aunque disfruté algunas de las películas españolas más "auténticas", preferí películas como "Los años bárbaros" porque estaban hechas para entretener. Nunca me han gustado mucho las películas tristes y "oscuras", prefiero las películas divertidas y acción.
Durante este proyecto pude entender mucho más sobre la industria cinematográfica española y en qué se diferencia de Hollywood. En Hollywood, las películas siempre se hacen para ganar dinero. En España parece que la mayoría de las películas se hacen primero para representar la historia y luego para ganar dinero. Me gustaba trabajar en un grupo, porque todos podíamos centrarnos en un solo tema. Estaba investigando ejemplos de "cine comercial" mientras mis compañeros de equipo trabajaban en comparaciones con películas estadounidenses, características de las películas y la historia de la industria.
Como todos aprendimos sobre nuestros propios temas, fue más fácil explicar nuestro tema al resto del equipo. Una cosa que encontré difícil fue la diferencia en la habilidad para hablar español. Desafortunadamente, todavía soy nuevo en hablar español y no he practicado mucho desde que comencé las clases en línea. Al principio estaba nervioso en el grupo porque uno de mis miembros es un hablante nativo de español, un miembro tiene una familia de habla hispana y el otro es un hablante nativo de portugués. Esto me hizo sentir como un extraño al principio, pero mi equipo me apoyó mucho y me ayudó cuando lo necesité. En general, creo que este proyecto grupal fue un éxito porque mejoró mi comprensión y capacidad para trabajar en equipo.
When starting this group project, I wasn't sure what to expect. I ended up really enjoying the theme we got, "commercial cinema". I think this is because we live in the United States and most of the movies here are of this type. Although I enjoyed some of the more "authentic" Spanish films, I preferred films like "The Barbarian Years" because they were meant to entertain. I have never really liked sad and "dark" movies, I prefer fun movies and action.
During this project I was able to understand a lot more about the Spanish film industry and how it differs from Hollywood. In Hollywood, movies are always made to make money. In Spain it seems that most movies are made first to represent the story and then to make money. I liked working in a group, because we could all focus on one subject. I was researching examples of "commercial cinema" while my teammates worked on comparisons to American films, characteristics of the films, and the history of the industry.
Since we all learned about our own topics, it was easier to explain our topic to the rest of the team. One thing I found difficult was the difference in Spanish speaking ability. Unfortunately, I am still new to speaking Spanish and have not practiced much since I started the online classes. At first I was nervous in the group because one of my members is a native Spanish speaker, one member has a Spanish speaking family and the other is a native Portuguese speaker. This made me feel like an outsider at first, but my team was very supportive and helped me when I needed it. Overall, I think this group project was a success because it improved my understanding and ability to work in a team.

Mi elección de centrarme en el cine social español para los proyectos de aprendizaje basado en proyectos surgió del interés en cómo los géneros cinematográficos reflejan e influyen en las narrativas sociales y políticas. El significativo acontecimiento histórico de la Guerra Civil española también ayudó a impulsar mi investigación para los proyectos, ya que proporcionó un rico contexto de la era franquista.
El viaje de investigación consistió en sumergirme en el mundo cinematográfico del cine social español, en particular las películas que retratan los impactos sociales de la guerra civil española. Profundicé en las obras de notables directores como José Luis Cuerda y Alejandro Amenábar, cuyas películas ofrecieron una visión profunda de los trastornos sociales de la época.
Este proceso de investigación ayudó a demostrar el poder del cine como medio para capturar los climas sociales y políticos. Mejoró mi comprensión de cómo el cine puede ser un espejo reflexivo y una fuerza impulsora en la formación de narrativas sociales.

My choice to focus on Spanish social cinema for the project-based learning projects stemmed from an interest in how film genres reflect and influence social and political narratives. The significant historical event of the Spanish Civil War also helped drive my research for the projects, as it provided a rich context of the Franco era.
The research journey consisted of immersing myself in the cinematic world of Spanish social cinema, particularly films portraying the social impacts of the Spanish Civil War. I delved into the works of notable directors such as José Luis Cuerda and Alejandro Amenábar, whose films offered a deep insight into the social upheavals of the era.
This research process helped demonstrate the power of film as a medium to capture social and political climates. It enhanced my understanding of how film can be a reflective mirror and a driving force in the formation of social narratives.
Reflecting on this research process, I have gained a deeper understanding of Spanish social cinema and enriched my skills in critical analysis and historical interpretation. This journey through the realms of cinema and history was challenging, but it really broadened my perspective on the role of cinema as capturing a period's politics, society, and even tensions.

Para empezar, el nombre de nuestro grupo en Canvas es “El cine histórico”. Por eso, mi grupo formó un tópico para nuestra presentación que involucraba historia. En nuestra primera reunión en Zoom, nosotras completamos el primer PBL. En esta reunión, nosotras hacemos una división del trabajo para la presentación final, elegimos un tópico general (“¿Como funciona el cine histórico un mecanismo para cuestionar el “status quo” y enseñar conciencia cultural?”), y elegimos algunas películas relacionadas al topico.
Para la empieza de la investigación, nosotras encontramos algunas fuentes para PBL 2 para encontrar más información sobre nuestro tópico. También nosotras organizamos y desarollamos más para la etapa próxima (el powerpoint). Para PBL 3, mi parte del trabajo era un resumen de las películas que elegimos para el proyecto. Yo vi las películas y escribí resúmenes sobre los eventos importantes, personajes, y temas. También elegí escenas interesantes para discutir en la presentación.
Nosotras creamos un grupo de texto para comunicar rápidamente y fácilmente. También comunicamos en Zoom cada semana para advanzar nuestro plan. Nosotras hablamos sobre el powerpoint y la cantidad de información debemos incluir en palabras en el powerpoint. Estamos de acuerdo de que no debemos incluir muchas palabras y durante la presentación actual discutiríamos más. En general, durante todo el proyecto y durante cada de las etapas, nosotras estamos muy cuidadosas con la división del trabajo, y esto era muy importante. No es justo cuando una person tiene más trabajo, y creo que nostras hacemos un buen trabajo con la división.
Lo que he aprendido sobre el cine español durante este proyecto es similar a la información de que yo he aprendido en la clase en general, y he aprendido mucho sobre la guerra civil, y esto es muy importante para nuestro tópico de cine historico. Con nuestro tópico con la perspectiva feminina durante la guerra civil en el cine espanol, fue genial que vimos otras películas en la clase con esta perspectiva feminina y podemos incluir este conocimiento en nuestra presentación también.
También he aprendido mucho con la ayuda de mis compañeras. He hecho mucho trabajo en grupos en el pasado, y no tengo muchas experiencias positivas en estos grupos. Proyectos en grupos en la universidad podrían ser muy difícil porque nunca sabes la ética de trabajo de sus compañeros. Mis compañeros en este grupo son muy trabajadoras y creo que nosotras hacemos un buen trabajo y estamos muy orgullosas.
Creo que las secciones diferentes (PBL 1, 2, y 3) eran muy importante para el proceso. Desde el exterior, el proyecto podría parecer mucho trabajo y un poco aterrador. Pero cuando haces el proyecto en sesiones y una justo división de trabajo, no es bastante para hacer. Para nuestro grupo, creo que tenemos una experiencia muy positiva y satisfactoria.
To begin with, the name of our group in Canvas is "Historical Cinema." So, my group formed a topic for our presentation that involved history. At our first Zoom meeting, we completed the first PBL. At this meeting, we made a division of labor for the final presentation, chose a general topic ("How does historical cinema function as a mechanism to question the status quo and teach cultural awareness?"), and chose some films related to the topic.
For the beginning of the research, we found some sources for PBL 2 to find more information about our topic. We also organized and developed more for the next stage (the powerpoint). For PBL 3, my part of the paper was a summary of the movies we chose for the project. I watched the movies and wrote summaries about the important events, characters, and themes. I also chose interesting scenes to discuss in the presentation.
We created a text group to communicate quickly and easily. We also communicated on Zoom each week to advance our plan. We talked about the powerpoint and how much information we should include in words in the powerpoint. We agreed that we should not include too many words and during the actual presentation we would discuss more. In general, during the whole project and during each of the stages, we are very careful with the division of labor, and this was very important. It's not fair when one person has more work, and I think we do a good job with the division.
What I have learned about Spanish cinema during this project is similar to the information that I have learned in the class in general, and I have learned a lot about the civil war, and this is very important for our historical film topic. With our topic with the feminine perspective during the civil war in Spanish cinema, it was great that we saw other movies in the class with this feminine perspective and we can include this knowledge in our presentation as well.
I have also learned a lot with the help of my classmates. I have done a lot of group work in the past, and I don't have many positive experiences in these groups. Group projects in college could be very difficult because you never know the work ethic of your classmates. My classmates in this group are very hard workers and I think we do a good job and we are very proud.
I think the different sections (PBL 1, 2, and 3) were very important to the process. From the outside, the project might look like a lot of work and a little scary. But when you do the project in sessions and a fair division of labor, it's not enough to do. For our group, I think we have a very positive and satisfying experience.

El PBL fue una gran experiencia para mí, especialmente porque soy estudiante de
secundaria. Aprendí a ser adaptable y trabajar con los horarios de las otras personas. Cuando tengo un proyecto, me gusta terminar mucho antes de la fecha límite, pero necesitaba darme cuenta de que otros prefieren tomar todo el tiempo para una tarea y tengo que respetar eso.
Este proyecto también me retó a tomar iniciativa. Creé un WhatsApp para que
pudiéramos saber la disponibilidad de todos y organizamos una reunión en zoom. Una reunión para planificación y una para follow-up antes de entregar la tarea. Hice esto para cada parte del PBL. También use Whatsapp para reajustar los plazos como fuera necesario.
A través del proyecto me di cuenta de la importancia del cine en la educación. El cine no
es sólo una cosa para hacer en tiempo libre, sino que enseña al público sobre un acontecimiento histórico que de otro modo no conocería.
Es una forma de apoyar las voces de los oprimidos y luchar por los derechos humanos. Se me ocurrió la idea de la conciencia cultural porque estoy en el panel de Diversidad, Equidad e Inclusión en mi escuela y hablamos sobre cómo preparar a los alumnos no solo para la universidad y la carrera, sino también para ser ciudadanos globales con conciencia cultural. Creo que el cine puede tocar un papel en esto.
Comparar "Las 13 Rosas" y "La Mujer del Anarquista" fortaleció mi habilidad de sintetizar
trabajos y ubicar las obras en un contexto más amplio. Las películas me enseñaron el peligro de una sola historia. Si sólo miramos a los hombres que fueron puestos en las cárceles, pero no tomamos la perspectiva de los que dejaron atrás-sus esposas e hijos-no podemos entender la situación bajo de Franco.
The PBL was a great experience for me, especially because I am a high school student. I learned to be adaptable and work with other peoples’ schedules. When I had a project, I liked to finish it before the deadline, but I needed to realize that others prefer to take all the time for one task and I have to respect that.
This project also challenged me to take initiative. I created a WhatsApp so that we could we could know everyone's availability and we set up a zoom meeting. One meeting for planning and one for follow-up before delivering the task. I did this for each part of the
PBL. I also used Whatsapp to readjust deadlines as needed.
Through the project I realized the importance of film in education. Film is not just a thing to do in free time, but it teaches the audience about a historical event that they would otherwise not know about.
It is a way to support the voices of the oppressed and fight for human rights. I came up with the idea of cultural awareness because I am on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion panel at my school and we talk about how to prepare students not only for college and career, but also to be culturally aware global citizens. I think film can play a role in this.
Comparing "The 13 Roses" and "The Anarchist's Wife" strengthened my ability to synthesize works and place the works in a broader context. The films taught me the danger of a single story. If we only look at the men who were put in the prisons, but don't take the perspective of those they left behind-their wives and children-we cannot understand the situation under Franco.

Admito que al principio del semestre estaba un poco estresada y nerviosa cuando vi que teníamos que hacer una presentación en grupo. Usualmente, los compañeros de grupo suelen dejar todo para el último momento pero este no fue el caso. Mi grupo fue bastante comunicativo y tomaron la iniciativa de hacer el trabajo lo antes posible. Me gusto mucho que mi grupo es el que atendió al viaje a España, pudimos hacer nuestra investigación con más prisa y poder terminar antes de irnos para disfrutar el viaje.
Cuando vimos que nos había tocado el tema de cine social tomamos un tiempo para ver qué película no queríamos enfocar y cual seria la mejor opción para demostrar nuestras ideas sobre el tema. Yo había visto la película “La Lengua de las Mariposas”, y decidí que sería una buena opción para el proyecto. Cuando entregamos el primer PBL vimos que esa película era una buena opción y continuamos con la búsqueda de nuestro tema, La Guerra Civil Española.
Personalmente, me gusto como mi grupo se comunicaban con preguntas, compartimos ideas y formamos diferentes opciones para decidir que ruta queríamos seguir. Al fin, todos nos pusimos de acuerdo en que partes hacer y a mi me toco analizar cómo La Guerra Civil española tuvo un impacto en la sociedad, y como dividió la sociedad Española. Use varios recursos de la librería de la universidad y sobre todo busque recursos que pudieran ayudarnos a todos en nuestras partes. Me gusto bastante analizar este tema y sobre todo, aprender cómo trabajar en grupo.
I admit that at the beginning of the semester I was a bit stressed and nervous when I saw that we had to do a group presentation. Usually, group mates usually leave everything to the last minute but this was not the case. My group was quite communicative and took the initiative to get the work done as soon as possible. I really liked that my group is the one that attended the trip to Spain, we were able to do our research in a hurry and be able to finish before we left to enjoy the trip.
When we saw that we had the topic of social cinema we took some time to see which film we didn't want to focus on and which would be the best option to demonstrate our ideas on the topic. I had seen the film "La Lengua de las Mariposas", and decided that it would be a good choice for the project. When we turned in the first PBL we saw that this movie was a good choice and continued our search for our topic, The Spanish Civil War.
Personally, I liked how my group communicated with questions, shared ideas and formed different options to decide which route we wanted to follow. In the end, we all agreed on what parts to do and I got to analyze how the Spanish Civil War had an impact on society, and how it divided Spanish society. I used various resources from the university bookstore and mostly looked for resources that could help us all in our parts. I really enjoyed analyzing this topic and most of all, learning how to work on it.
